Sunday Startup
There is a very well-known tradition in South Africa for the privileged families that own a TV set and a subscription to DSTV. At 7pm, for the past 30 odd years, the opening theme tune of the investigative journalism TV show Carte Blanche has filled terror into the hearts of South Africans. The show is iconic in South Africa, and advertisers throw themselves at ad slots during this 7-8pm Sunday evening time slot. It’s compelling viewing for most, but it’s not the show’s content that strikes terror in the hearts of its viewers. It’s what that iconic theme music represents…it signals the end of the weekend.
It doesn’t matter how good your weekend was, when that music fills your living room, it’s the death knell you’ve been dreading. Now you know your weekend is over. In a few hours you’ll be getting ready for a new week.
Queue the Monday blues.
The problem with the Monday blues is that they start at 7pm on a Sunday evening. For many years, I suffered from this syndrome. Its gut wrenching. The only two days you have available to switch off, and be free, literally fly by in the absolute blink of an eye.
It’s wrong.
If you’re living your life waiting for Friday to come by as quickly as possible then you’re doing something wrong.
Monday Blues has nothing to do with Carte Blanche. It has nothing to do with your job either. It has everything to do with you, your choices, and your mindset.
Life is for living. You cannot live only for the weekend. What a waste of a life.
If you’re unhappy with whatever it is you do on a Monday morning, then make a decision to change. As one of my best friends always reminds me…you, are not a tree. You can move. You can decide to be happy or you can decide to stay exactly where you are.
You are responsible for your own happiness. Nobody else has that power when it comes to your life. When you take charge of your own happiness, everything changes. Do something you love. Explore your passions, and find what it is that would bring joy to whatever it is you currently do from Monday to Friday.
What’s the point of wishing away 5 days of every week of your life. That’s no way to live.
So how do you start? Get your mind into the right space.. It’s your choice. You can watch Carte Blanche, or you can sign up here to receive my weekly Sunday Startup mail. Your week starts here.
